Congratulations LT Erica Prosper on being elected to the LCOS Executive Board as 2nd Vice President! Welcome back!
Hello, my name is Evelyn Portes. I am a Court Officer in the 10th JD Suffolk County. I am a proud Dominican and the mother of two amazing teenagers. I began my career in the court system in 2009 in County Court. I then transferred to Supreme Court and have been on the Chief’s staff for the past three years.
As an officer, I have always sought opportunities to stay involved and have been an active member of various outreach programs at our courthouse. I have been a Latino Court Officer Society member since its inception. I have participated in multiple outreach events, such as the Thanksgiving fundraiser to feed the homeless held in Suffolk County for the past three years, by helping to raise funds and distribute the meals on Thanksgiving morning. If elected, I look forward to helping LCOS grow and help further its cause of helping all those in need.
Ishaira Garcia is a proud native New Yorker born and raised in Bronx County. Her parents both hail from Guayama, Puerto Rico, where they instilled her Puerto Rican culture with orgullo (pride), fuerza (strength) y amor (love). Ishaira received her B.S. and A.S. from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Ishaira began her career with the Unified Court System as a Court Officer in Supreme Court-Criminal Term Bronx County in February of 2016. She took great care to maintain safety and security for court staff, litigants, and members of the public. Ishaira proudly serves as the Financial Secretary of the Latino Court Officer’s Society, where she was appointed in 2017 and has been an active member since its inception. It is amazing all the work the Latino Court Officers Society has done for the community at large and the support we give each other as brothers and sisters of the Unified Court System. Ishaira is a 2022 New York City Marathoner and hopes to create an LCOS running team to promote health and continue the camaraderie within LCOS.
As the proud recipient of the 12th Judicial District's Gender Fairness Woman of Distinction Award in 2019, Ishaira is committed to ensuring equity and the proper administration of court functions in New York State Courts for all members of the Unified Court System. In 2020, Ishaira became a member of the 12th Judicial District’s Gender Fairness Committee to pay it forward.
Ishaira Garcia now works as a Senior Court Clerk in Supreme Court Bronx County, Criminal Term. Ishaira runs a high-volume Supreme Criminal Court part. She has trained, supervised, and guided newly appointed Senior Court Clerks on the policies and procedures required to ensure the responsible and expeditious execution of critical court functions.
Serving on the Latino Court Officer’s Society board for more than 5 years has been a steady reminder of how important public service is to Ishaira. From flying to Puerto Rico after one of the biggest hurricane devastations in the Caribbean to provide joy to children during their holiday to participating in countless fundraisers and drives, being a part of LCOS has reinforced her belief that a small group of deeply committed people can accomplish so much together. Ishaira’s pride in being a part of LCOS is profound, and her commitment to helping LCOS reach even more deserving people is palpable. Ishaira is excited to share her innovative ideas and is looking forward to serving the LCOS indefinitely!
My name is Lieutenant Erica Prosper; I started my career in 2010 in the 9th JD. I am currently a full-time NYS Court Officers Academy Instructor. But did you know I am one of the Founders of the Latino Court Officers Society? Since my first day at my command in Mount Vernon City Court, I wanted to know where to meet more people and show my pride! Eventually, while attending a NY JETS tailgating event in 2015, CO Anthony Vazquez became tired of hearing me talk about needing more people to represent at the NYC Puerto Rican Day Parade, LOL. That’s when he told me, still a new jack then, to talk to Court Officer (at the time) Jessica Hernandez. Fast forward to 2016, Jessica and I were motivated and inspired, and Anthony Vazquez knew we were on to something special. That’s when the three of us joined forces and invited Sgt. Ralph Nieves to provide a space where Latinos and others interested in our culture could gather, connect, and foster professional development. UNIDAD By September 2017, the Latino Court Officers Society (LCOS) became an active Fraternal Organization in the Unified Court System. There is so much pride in having an idea, working collaboratively, and bringing a vision to fruition. ORGULLO
LCOS hit the ground running, and I have been blessed to be a part of an organization that was immediately ready to jump significant hurdles, like collecting over a thousand toys for children after Hurricane Maria, flying them to Puerto Rico, connecting with the Puerto Rico State Guard, and coordinating toy deliveries to hospitals, small pueblos, and hard-to-reach locations on the island. The Latino Court Officers Society had strength from the beginning. FUERZA
For me, this is all about CONNECTING. Having an intellectual, professional, and social space where a UCS Court employee of Latino/Hispanic descent, or anyone interested in our culture, can meet, exchange ideas, and celebrate life! When people “show up,” incredible growth and opportunity will follow. Vote for me, and let’s continue to push the Latino Court Officers Society to even greater heights.
All classes start promptly at 6:30 pm and end at 8:00 pm (estimated).
